Saving

How do I save an article online to read later?

Short answer

Use a read later app: install its browser extension, click save on any article, and read it later in a clean view without ads. Lumen does this for free, keeps your place, and builds a short daily reading plan so saved articles actually get read.

Step by step

  1. Create a free Lumen account (or try the demo).
  2. Install the Lumen browser extension, or press Save a link in the dashboard.
  3. On any article, press Alt+Shift+S or the toolbar icon to save it.
  4. Open your Library or Today's reads to read it later in a clean, distraction free view.

Good to know

Bookmarks save a link; a read later app saves the article. The difference matters when the page changes, goes behind a paywall, or you are offline: a clean copy keeps the text, the author and the date.

The harder part is reading what you save. Most people's read later lists only grow. Lumen fixes that with a daily plan that fits your time: one article you started, plus inbox items that fit the minutes you have, oldest first.

Since Pocket (July 2025) and Omnivore (November 2024) shut down, pick a tool that lets you export everything. Lumen exports JSON and markdown at any time and is open source.

Answer

Is a bookmark the same as saving to read later?

No. A bookmark stores only the link. A read later app stores a readable copy of the article, tracks your progress and lets you highlight it.

Answer

What replaced Pocket?

Pocket shut down in July 2025. Read later apps such as Lumen, Readwise Reader and Instapaper cover the same need.
